Study After Every Class Study after every class. This may sound like overkill but it's not. It ensures that you know everything for class and for tests with very little additional preparation needed before those tests. Study For Your Most Difficult Classes First You may want to avoid your most difficult classes and put them off until last but don't. You need to devote more energy and focus to your difficult classes so always study for them first. Waiting until you have worn out your brain and body by studying everything else first will only make your most difficult classes seem even more difficult. Turn Off Your Phone This is serious. Your phone is a big distraction and you can check it when you take a study break. Until break time, however, you need that phone off so that you are not distracted for a second by calls or texts. It makes more of a difference in your concentration than you realize. Aim For Mastery Of The Material Don't study to pass. Study to know the material that you are studying inside and out. Then when test day comes passing will be easy. Teach The Lessons Yourself You understand lessons better when you have to explain them to someone else. Either find someone to teach or just explain the lessons to yourself in the mirror. Having to teach what you need to know is a fantastic way of making sure you know what you are talking about. Set Facts To Music When you need to remember something then set it to music and sing it. It sounds odd but it works. Music makes information easier to remember even if you remember it because you could never forget how stupid you feel setting facts to music. Imagine Facts In Pictures You want to picture what you are learning. Then you want to embellish those images. If you can think of funny or weird ways to picture whatever it is that you happen to be learning then you will be that much more likely to remember it. It doesn't matter what you picture so long as it is memorable to you. Use State Dependent Learning When you are happy then it is easier to remember other times when you were happy. When you are sad then it's easier to remember other times when you were sad. The same goes for when you are eating chocolate, listening to a certain song, or doing just about anything else. When you learn something in a specific state then it is easier to remember the information when you are in that state again. It sounds odd and maybe even a little farfetched but this is how the brain works. Use it to your advantage. Tom Henry Rheinecker blogs often about what students should expect when they earn an AS degree online.
